A screening of The Bread Winner followed by an exclusive dinner was a launch for the AWF’s new housing project initiative. The event was attended by Ambassador Robert Hill, Ambassador Morten Wetland, Ambassador Zahir Tanin, Ambassador Frank Majoor, UNISEF Executive Director Anne Veneman and Richard Meier.
The housing project strives to provide affordable housing built in harmony with the environment. The project also encourages the healthy reconstruction of Afghanistan while respecting Afghan culture and tradition.
A typical Afghan family lives in a compound structure with extended family groups. Therefore, this housing program must:
• Be inexpensive so it can be provided to as many people as possible
• Be rapidly deployed. Unstable conditions make long-term projects vulnerable to hostile interference
• Finally, and most importantly, be versatile and be able to integrate with the existing cultural norms
