The Ambassador’s Ball for Afghanistan was a prestigious gala held at the New York Plaza Hotel on May 9, 1989. The Honorary Chairpersons for the event were Jeanne Kirkpatrick (former US ambassador to the UN), Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan (UN High Commissioner for Refugees), and Dr. Henry Kissinger. Co-chairs for the event were Ambassador Francis Kellogg, Robin Duke, Angier Biddle Duke and John Train. The Dinner Committee included Carolina Herrera, Georgette Mosbacher, Marylou Whitney and Kimberly Rockefeller. The entire event was underwritten by Bulgari and Bijan designed special scarves for the women and designer soap for the men. A lavish five course Afghan dinner preceded the performance by Peter Duchin Orchestra in a spectacular Ballroom filled with orchids and chintz. Preview reception for the exquisite Bulgari auction was held at Maxims in New York.
