AWF Housing Project Initiative
Objective / Background: After decades of war and hostile occupation, the Afghan population is left in abject poverty lacking basic human necessities and has stranded millions in tent camps. With no place to go, and nothing to do, refugees become helpless, easy targets for the oppressive Taliban regime. The key to breaking this cycle is housing. When a person has a home, a family is provided for.Our housing project strives to provide affordable housing built in harmony with the environment. The project also encourages the healthy reconstruction of Afghanistan while respecting Afghan culture and tradition. A typical Afghan family lives in a compound structure with extended family groups.
The program must: • Be inexpensive so it can be provided to as many people as possible. • Be rapidly deployed. Unstable conditions make long-term projects vulnerable to hostile interference. • Finally, and most importantly, be versatile and be able to integrate with the existing cultural norms.
Next Steps / Strategy: The plan is to recycle pre-existing steel shipping containers, of which thousands are already in the region, to create a steel core for the foundation of each home. Each unit will consist of two homes that will be installed based on the grid of the existing tent communities. Consistent with Afghan tradition, locals will be employed to apply 2-foot mud walls and a roof over each structure. This provides natural thermal insulation. An Eco Sanitation unit that uses minimal water will be placed within each home. Human waste will be divided into separate containers where solid waste is treated with a process that creates potting soil, which will then be used to replenish the earth contaminated by the chemicals of cluster bombs.
